The Pipettes @ Bowery Ballroom

If you took a 1960s girl group and ran them headlong into the 80s you'd come up with the cotton candy fun of the Pipettes! The trio hit the states in support of fellow UK gal Amy Winehouse before heading off to SXSW.

Shoobe doobe doo . . . Sha na na na na. . .

SheWritesRock's favorite track = "Judy".

Stevie Nicks Back with a New CD/DVD Set

Fleetwood Mac's Lady O' Chiffon will release a greatest/hits CD/DVD disc called Crystal Visions on March 27th. Yes, I already have the CD with all of the old hits, but the DVD makes this one worth the buy. It has all of those classic (read - wonderfully cheesy) Nicks videos with commentary by the gypsy herself - and, she has quite a sense of humor beneath all the fluff and frills.

For a preview, check out this unreleased video for "Stand Back".

My favorite comment - "Take me home. What the heck does that mean?"

I wish more rockers would admit that they don't what the hell their lyrics mean.

Stevie Nicks is also due to make an appearance on the Today Show on March 30th and will hit the road with Chris Isaak this summer.

Ra Ra Riot @ Canal Room

looserecord.com and baeblemusic.com threw a party at Canal Room.

It was hard, but many of us did manage to migrate over from the L.E.S. to catch Ra Ra Riot in action.

For the full scoop - look here.

Or you can skip the reading part and check out the pictures.

The Plug Awards - Celebrate Your Favorite "Indie"

I'll ruin it right away - you really love Stephen Malkmus and Band of Horses. The indie world's McDreamy (Malkmus) and McDonalds (Horses) won big but, being that this was the Plug Awards (a "fake awards" according to host David Cross), there were no physical plague thingys to hand out and bless their hearts no speeches to listen to.

Some SNLish skits were and stunts were in order though:

good: Cross dissing on "Inside the Actors" host James Lipton by putting on a fake beard and turning into "Jimmy J" Lipton and chatting up Malkmus.

bad: iPod battles lets you get your rage out by trading tracks. Supposedly, it's all the rage in France=nuff said.

They did have some sweet tunes though thanks to lively performances by Tokyo Police Club, Deerhoof, Silversun Pickups (kid next to me - "Oh, my god! I took the ferry to see them".) and Stephen Malkmus.

Pics . . .

Arresting! - The Police Open the Grammys

Yes, believe it or not . . . they did it! 80s icons (and soon to be 2007 tourers) The Police opened the 2007 Grammy Awards by rocking their way through "Roxanne".

Tomorrow. the trio will be holding a press conference/rehearsal at Whisky A-Go-Go to "make an announcement". In other words, these guys are going to be taking a big bite out of your summer concert-going budget. Except it and move on - you know you'll be buying tickets!

I will.

R.I.P. "Papa" Denny

"All the leaves are brown and the skies are gray" . . . because we he heard the sad news that Denny Doherty of The Mamas and the Papas passed away yesterday in his native Canada at 66 years of age. (That's him on the far left.)

This leaves "Mama" Michelle Phillips as the last member standing of the short-lived but legendary super 60s quartet.

It's Denny's incredibly golden voice that carried most of the band's tunes and while everyone is mentioning "California Dreamin" today (yes, I know it's an amazing tune), I chose to play "Dancing Bear" again and again in memorium.

May God, Buddha or whomever you choose speed you, Denny! John and Cass are waiting and I'm sure they have some great tunes for you to sing on that great big stage in the sky.
