Bjork Rules Coachella!

From the reports trickling in, it sounds like Coachella should be re-named "Bjorkfest".

All I'm hearing is "Bjork, Bjork, Bjork"!

Ouch, for the Arcade Fire and everyone else who got tossed into the also-ran category.

But you can be the ultimate judge as to whether or not everyone's favorite Icelandic pixie really did kill it.

Here's a video of "Wanderlust" hot from Coachella 2007!

More video clips here.

And in other news, you can listen to the Bjork's new album Volta over at NME. I think you have to register though or something irritating like that.

Reunion Wars - The Police vs. Genesis

Van Halen was down for the count way before the Mr. Softee trucks started jingling down the street, but there were still rumors going around that the summer reunion tour market was going to be very "healthy" . . . for everyone but the fans.

With the Rolling Stones playing Europe, Paul McCartney off the road and Madonna still untwisting herself from last summer's yoga position, it's up to a pair of new reunions to suck up our summer dollars.

Let's meet them shall we:

In one corner, looking old-school sleek and still wearing tight black things - The Police!

And our contender in the other corner, looking uncomfortable and geeky (are they wearing shoulder pads?) just like they did in the 1980s - Genesis!

Give a welcome to our boys of summer before we break it down!

Okay, quiet now . . .

We've been expecting Genesis to announce U.S. dates. What were they waiting for?

Now, we know. They were waiting for The Police to set their ticket prices so the Land of Confusioners could make sure they topped them.

Using the NYC / Madison Square Garden dates as an example:

THE POLICE - August 1st & August 3rd

Tix are long gone but they ranged from $54.50 - $254.50
The "Crazy" "Gold Seat" Package ran you $404.50

GENESIS - September 25th (more dates will probably be added)

Tix on sale April 30th (Monday) - 9:00 a.m.

Price range = $61.50 - $256.50
The "Insane" "Hot Seat" Package will set you back $479.50

We'll have to wait until the tours end, summer fades away and all those receipts are counted before we know who the winner is (hint - it won't be my wallet), but in the meantime, anyone want to guess how much t-shirts will be?

Finalists For 2007 Shortlist Music Prize

Press relese just in!

The Shortlist Music Prize nominating committee came up with these 10 finalists from a list of 60.

- Band of Horses
- Beirut
- Bonnie Prince Billy
- Cat Power
- Girl Talk
- Hot Chip
- Joanna Newsom
- Regina Spektor
- Spank Rock
- Tom Waits

The winner will be announced in May.

You can listen to music from all of the nominees and finalists at myspace.com/shortlistofmusic.

Let the guessing begin!

I'm thinking Joanna Newsom or Girl Talk could come out on top, but not really a bad name on the list.

Editors - New Album Info.

When I chatted with Editors bass man Russell Leetch last summer, the band was already working on a follow up to their hot out of the box debut The Back Room.

He described the new sound the band was toying with as "a bit huger".

Looks like the guys stayed with it because the report from NME is that Editors second disc An End Has A Start is going to be a big loud step forward for the guys.

The album drops on June 25th in the UK while us North American kids are still waiting for a date to mark on our release calendars.

Track Listing:

- Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors
- An End Has A Start
- The Weight of the World
- Bones
- When Anger Shows
- The Racing Rats
- Push Your Head Towards The Air
- Escape The Nest
- Spiders
- Well Worn Hand

Editors are also hitting the road. No U.S. dates yet but a bunch of UK and Europe gigs.

Full list here.

White Stripes Playing Madison Square Garden

Yes, that's right, on July 24th Jack and Meg will be playing the arena part of MSG - not the theatre.

Gulp.

That icky thump I hear is my wallet falling to it's death.

The rest of the dates are here.

40 Songs that Changed the World

Rolling Stone needs our help.

They've compiled a list of songs that they think "changed the world".

Now, before you start pulling out your hair, frothing at the mouth and screaming "What were they thinking?" (like I did) notice that they are asking for corrections suggestions.

They'll post a "List of the People" on June 29th.

Take a look at the list and then join me in some random ranting and raving.

Ready?

My issues . . . besides the "changed the world" tag are:

- Joni Mitchell - "Help Me" : Yes, it's a good song but hello - "Big Yellow Taxi" has really stood the test of time and is still incredibly eco-relevant.

- Bob Dylan - Trade "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" or "Blowin' in the Wind".

- Yes, thank you for including The Sex Pistols but no "London Calling" from The Clash? Aaargh!!!

- If you're gonna talk about playing hard and the birth of metal where's Sabbath?

- I'm sure Lou Reed is out there writing a whole album right now on how Velvet Underground's "Heroin" changed the world. I don't buy it and I won't buy it.

- How did they come to decide on "Strawberry Fields" for the necessary late-era Beatles songs? "Let it Be" didn't look as pretty on the page?

- Did "Louie Louie" change the world or just allow a lot of government types to put in for overtime?

- Don't even get me started on #39 - Britney Spears! (When I first read the list and got to that part, I was so disgusted concerned that I knocked over my water bottle. Rolling Stone please send me $1.50 to cover the loss of my Poland Spring.)

Rant over . . . back to whatever your regular programming is!

Jesus and Mary Chain - NYC on Sale Info!

Tix go on sale tomorrow (Wednesday, April 25th) at noon for the May 21st & 22nd shows at Webster Hall.

Be on the page at 11:30 a.m. cause these are gonna go quicker than music venues in the L.E.S.

A little something to get you stoked:

Patick Wolf Says "Buh-Bye"

According to stereogum who found a post on his fanboad, Patrick Wolf will be playing his final show "this November in London".

Before crying over the idea of never seeing Mr. Wolf in all of his glitter glory again, I think I'll take this "news" with a LARGE grain of salt.

Wishin' him well though - whatever he chooses!

Friday Flashback = The Go-Go's

It's been a long week so TGIF!!

Here's a slice of 80s fun coming at ya!

The Go-Go's - "Our Lips Are Sealed"

New Stuff From Concrete Blonde's Johnette!

Remember Concrete Blonde? Their song "Joey" is a constant top 10er in my iTunes playlist so I'm VERY curious to hear singer/bassist Johnette Napolitano's solo disc.

The album is called Scarred and it's due May 29th via Hybrid Recordings.

Tour starts April 27th in San Francisco.

NYC date = May 16th @ Canal Room - Tix

Full dates at pollstar

Fearless Music - Have You Watched Yet?

I might be a little late to the table on this one (hey, there are only so many hours in a day!) but I just discovered the T.V. show Fearless Music last weekend.

It showcases under the radar rock. So if you're in the New York area and you like to stay up late or come home late on a Saturday night (guilty and proud of it here!)check it out.

The show airs at 1:00 a.m. on Fox. Hmmm . . . do the right wingers know that indie music is being played on THEIR network?

If you're not in NYC, you can play around on the website and see where it comes on in your area.

The show is a little rough around the edges and I don't know if I'd call the bands and music "fearless" but I enjoyed Clear Static's song "Make Up Sex" from last week's show.

Patti Smith @ Hiro Ballroom

Punk rocker Patti Smith kicked off her upcoming tour and celebrated the release of her covers album Twelve last night at Hiro Ballroom.

It was the best kind of Patti Smith show - full of poetry, roaring songs and of course, spitting!

She took the stage 8:30-9:00ish and didn't surrender until Midnight performing two long sets with a 15 minute break in between. The first set was full of material from the new album.

A lot has been made over a punk like Patti releasing a whole disc's worth of material featuring other people's songs, but afer you listen to her charge headlong into psychedlics like "Are You Experienced" and "White Rabbit" (FEED YOUR HEAD!) any doubters should be bitch-slapped into silence.

The second set brought out the hits - "Because the Night" and "Gloria" (God, I still love this song!) and some more covers. The best of the night had to be a heart-wrenching slowed down take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". They may have been born decades apart but Patti Smith and Kurt Cobain definitely speak the same language.

Any good punk show has to have an element of the bizzare - this was ours:

Patti put on her glasses to read some poetry when a woman in the crowd started to make noises like a dying kitten. Patti popped up her head to ask if the woman was "okay back there" only to have the "kitten" yell back "There's not enough noise in the town!"

Um . . . okay!

Even Patti was left pretty much speechless by that one.

Other random things we learned during the night (she was in a chatty mood)

- Patti hates Paul Simon so much she never saw The Graduate and considers it "karma" that she fell in love with "The Boy in the Bubble" and just had to record it for her new album.

- Believe it or not, Patti is doing the narration for the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.

- Why did she record Tears for Fears pop hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"? Patti - "Because I wanted to! Because I f-ing wanted to!"

Yeah, it was a great night!

Tour dates and listen here.

The Runaways Coming to the Silver Screen

Hot off the presses from Variety.

The story of the 70s punk rockers the Runaways is getting the feature film treatment. Rights have been acquired from members Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and Sandy West (RIP)

Who do you think should play the girls?

Watch a video and then play casting director!

No "Wild Horses" for the Stones!

The Rolling Stones are coming to Belgrade and that could mean no satisfaction for 300 race horses who call a nearby stable home sweet home.

If the horses get too worked up by the Stones they might have to be sedated.

No word yet on whether or not Keith is planning to rent a stall and try to play pony in the hopes of scoring a little something that will keep him ON that cloud.

Full story here.

Bob Geldof & the Dictionary of Man?

I think most of us will agree that Live 8 didn't exactly live up to Live Aid, but does Bob Geldof really think creating a Dictionary of Man is the best choice for his next venture?

The only questions I have are will Bono have his own entry and how many pages will it be?

You know, I never thought I'd say this but maybe it's time for a Boomtown Rats reunion.

White Stripes - Icky Thump

NME has a track by track description of Jack and Meg's latest Icky Thump.

Read only if you don't want to be surprised when you pick up the album (which I know you will) on June 19th!

Rodrigo Y Gabriela @ Webster Hall

They may have had some trouble getting here due to visa problems and the deluge of rain, but thank God they made it!

Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the fiery dueling guitarist from Mexico, put on one of the most explosive sets I've ever seen. They may have stayed in their chairs for most of it, but the energy still poured off the stage.

Beside their own tunes, they also coverd "Wish You Were Here" and "Stairway to Heaven". Floyd and Zep would be proud!!

They were joined at the end of their set by Alex Skolnick. Yes, it makes since - R Y G started out playing in Mexican metal bands.

Listen to their great guitars here and then pick up their new self-titled album.

Some pics:

Why Studio B is an Idiot's Playground

Caught the Klaxons and their openers Bonde Do Role (who blew me away) at Studio B in Brooklyn on Friday.

Klaxons put out some serious "new rave" though there weren't that many glow sticks waving.

But I have to say some "entertaining" members of the crowd actually out did the bands.

Studio B may be in the middle of nowhere but it's one of the posher venues on the inside with raised platforms that have leather sofas and the whole bit.

Oh, yes - about the leather sofa space! Dirty little secret (that's becoming way too common lately) is that you can reserve tables and couches if you can get a big group together and buy numerous bottles of alcohol.

So in other words, even if the show is sold out, if you and you're drinking buddies can shell out some extra dough - you're in with the best view in the house.

So many things wrong with this and they were ALL on display on Fri. night.

A group of meaty guys who had no clue what band was playing that night had obviously decided that Studio B was the place to be and that they were going to impress their girlfriends by going all out with table service and couches.

Of course, one of the guys was trashed and looking for a fight before Klaxons ever hit the stage.

Now, Klaxons have their fans, particularly female, who will do anything to get up close and personal with the guys including invading the space of Mr. Couch Alkie and Co. It was hilarious seeing this guy trying to explain to a woman climbing the couch that this was his couch and that he'd paid a lot of money for it and no one could come into his space . . . blah . . . blah . . . blah

Um . . . newsflash! If you go to a sold-out show at any club, there is NO such thing as personal space.

And if you forked over a wad cash thinking you could get it - THEN THE JOKE IS ON YOU BUDDY!

Rant over . . .

On to happpier moments like Klaxons pics:

Is It Still Possible to be a GNR Fan?

Japan dates postponed. Bassist Tommy Stinson fell down a flight of stairs and sprained his hand.

Maybe this is a big fat old sign - not that I'm bitter or anything!

Let's just bury Chinese Democracy forever and keep our memories of this . . .

Libertines- Reunited!

Believe it or not, it happend last night at the Hackney Empire. Pete and Carl got together long enough to play 13 songs.

Full details at NME.com.

Here's some video of "Albion" . . .

We Are the Champions . . . of ice cream

Ben and Jerry's has created a Queen-flavored ice cream called "Bohemian Raspberry".

No official word on when it hits the freezer's but grab it when you see it cause it's for a good cause. This flavor will benefit the AIDS-fighting Mercury Phoenix Trust.

AND . . . April 16th is B&J "Free Cone Day"!

Low @ Webster Hall

Duluth's favorite slow-corers Low graced NYC with their gorgeous tunes. Their music is so delicate you could even hear the whir and click of the cameras from the photo pit.

The trio played a long set that included two encores and lots of friendly stage banter from vocalist/guitarist Alan Sparhawk.

SheWritesRock's favorite track = "Breaker"

"Sgt. Pepper's" Gets Covered

. . . by a whole lot of interesting people according to NME.

Supposedly, on board to help the Beatles ablum celebrate it's 40th B-Day are:

- Oasis
- The Killers
- Kaiser Chiefs
- The Fratellis
- Razorlight

Nothing officail yet, but anyone want to take a guess on what band attempts which tune?

I'd like to see The Killers take on "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and Fratellis could so light up "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite".

Gore's "Live Earth" Coming to NYC?

Reported in Variety.

Randall's Island, Shea Stadium and Prospect Park are in the running.

I'm pulling for Prospect Park.

Hey, Disney - Keith is NOT Winnie the Pooh!

Poor family-friendly Disney!

What are they gonna do with "Pirate" Keith Richards and his "I snorted dear old dad/Just Joking!" escapades?

Whether or not the rocker really created a cocaine salad out of dad's ashes or not, were the suits in the publicity department really going to plop him down on the Today Show to have a nice talk with Matt and Meredith?

Letting Keith loose to do publicity for anything other than the Stones (where he has comfortably played a drunken pirate for years) probably isn't a good idea - but I'd still count it as "Must See TV".

Keep on rockin' Keith and make 'em all walk the plank!

Amy Winehouse - Live Review

To help pass the afternoon . . . a live review I wrote about Ms. "Rehab" posted at looserecord.com

Pearl Jam to Headline Lollapalooza

They're headlining the final night which is August 5th.

It will be their only U.S. date this year so you know what to do - tix

Dr. John to be Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame

One of New Orleans' favorite sons Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack Jr. (that's Dr. John to almost everyone but his Mama) will probably be anything but "blue" when he rolls on into the Hall on May 9th.

The Dr. has one of the best voices to come out of the delta area and he has the Southern charm to go along with it. Look up "entertainer" in that ancient thing called a dictionary and you'll probably see his face.

I was first introduced to Dr. John by watching him tear up on "Such a Night" on The Band's concert film The Last Waltz

Career highlight = the album Gris Gris (1968)

Also getting the nod from the Blues Hall - Dave Bartholomew and the late music-makers Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Non performers are Art Rupe & Ahmet Ertegun (they better be throwing one hell of a rockin' party in the sky for this guy!)

Amy Sedaris Picks "Entertaining" Tunes

Amy Sedaris always cracked me up and she might even convince me to buy her new book on hospitality - IF I had time to stay in and entertain and be hospitable.

I'm sure Sedaris is fab with food but to be honest, I'm going for her play lists like:

"Entertaining People Who Are 10 Years Younger Than Yourself--and Who Like to Sing Along in an Annoying Way"

"Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits" (Key Track: "Anticipation")

"Tapestry," Carole King (Key Track: "You've Got a Friend")

"Bella Donna," Stevie Nicks (Key Track: "Outside the Rain")

For the perfect plays lists for other eclectic gatherings - go here.
